To the Editor:
When I heard that Selectman Peter Braun had published a decidedly negative response in the Squirrel to one of my recent columns, I was sure he was responding to the one I wrote endorsing his opponent, Vin Cannistraro for Selectman in the upcoming election. Everyone can read that one on my blog (Lincoln Blogs the Future) at www.lincoln-ma.com.
But, lo and behold, I learned that he was upset with the one I wrote that predicted ways Lincoln may end up deluged with traffic as the construction of the Rt. 2 flyover at Crosby’s Corner begins. Jeepers, I was merely following up on comments the selectmen themselves made during their February 24 meeting. In it, they expressed consternation that The Commons’ direct access to Rt. 2 would be closed, and how that that might cause extra traffic on Sandy Pond Road.
Peter avers in his letter that my statements were already “truly, and regrettably, incorrect.” That remains to be seen. We should know better in a few months.
I am pleased to hear that traffic will not be diverted through Lincoln, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t coming. Intermittent closing of Rt. 2 lanes will surely cause backups whatever time they occur. And savvy, frustrated rush hour commuters will certainly try Lincoln’s backroads, possibly in droves if MassDOT’s best-laid plans don’t work out, or are ignored by the contractor, as was done with agreements to protect Lincoln’s trees.
I sincerely hope that, unlike last Spring, when the trees of Lincoln fell to the axe by the hundreds (or was it thousands?) while town officials did nothing, Peter and his colleagues will be out in full force, patrolling Rt. 2 when the spring construction season begins in earnest, monitoring the traffic and its impact on Lincoln.
Sincerely,
Neil Feinberg
