You wouldn’t know by looking outside, but it’s almost growing season, and local farms are gearing up to sell CSA (community-supported agriculture) shares of vegetables and meat this summer.
Codman Community Farm and The Food Project in Lincoln are collaborating to promote a healthy Lincoln-grown local diet. Sign up for a summer vegetable share at The Food Project and then sign up for Codman Farm meat CSA starting in July, and pickup times will be matched for your convenience.
A six-month share in the Codman meat CSA, which runs from July to December, is $600. Members receive 5 lbs. of beef and 5 lbs. of pork each month from Codman Community Farm’s own animals. For more information, visit the CCF farm store webpage.
Lincoln farm shareholders in the Food Project CSA pay $37.50 a week for 8-20 pounds of organically grown produce, payable all at once or in four monthly installments. The share price includes an average of $35 worth of produce each week, plus a voluntary, tax-deductible donation of $2.50 toward the organization’s Farm to Family program, which makes CSA shares available to low-income families at HeadStart centers in Boston, for a total cost of $750 for 20 weeks. Food Project shares can be picked up from late June through late October at the Baker Bridge farm in Lincoln, which includes pick-your-own flowers and herbs.
CSA box delivery is also available throughout the metro Boston Area, with delivery sites in Lincoln, Arlington, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Wellesley, Jamaica Plain, and Roxbury. Food grown at The Food Project farms is distributed through its CSA program and farmers’ markets and donated to local hunger relief organizations. The organization also provides summer work and educational opportunities for urban and local youth. Each year, over 150 teenagers and thousands of volunteers farm more than 40 acres in Beverly, Boston and Lynn as well as Lincoln.
For more information, call 781-259-8621 ext. 20 or visit The Food Project’s Lincoln farm share webpage.
Drumlin Farm also offers a CSA where members can get 8-18 different crops per week depending on the time of the season (a value of $30-$80 per week). A share will feed a family of four or 2-4 adults, depending on how often you cook and how central vegetables are to your diet. Each share is $650. Pick-up takes place Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m. (extended hours from last year) at the Drumlin Farm wash station. For the first time, the Drumlin CSA will offer a limited number of boxed shares for those who cannot make the trip down to the farm’s wash station or who would prefer the convenience of a prepared share.

I’ve been doing the Codman CSA (pork only) and it’s been great. Really nice country ribs, smoked pork shoulder, breakfast sausage, etc. I also recommend the Lindentree Farm CSA. The goat legs Drumlin has had recently have been fantastic. Couldn’t eat more local if I had my own farm!
