Community center group sees final sketches

March 14, 2024

(Editor’s note: this article was corrected on March 15 to correct the estimated construction start and completion dates.)

ICON Architects previewed its Town Meeting presentation on March 13 to the the Community Center Building Committee. Residents will vote on whether t0 approve spending $24 million for its construction at Town Meeting on March 23, where a two-thirds majority is required for passage, and again at the ballot box on March 25, which requires only a simple majority.

If voters approve, construction could begin in mid-2025 and be completed by fall 2026, ICON’s Mark McKevitz said.

Thanks for all the hard work from the committee and staff, but here is my take:
-lots of (expensive) sq. footage in long hallways,
-lots of lights streaming in-great in winter, but summer? Won’t those in the exercise room bake?
-maybe it’s just me, but the lobbies/large rooms look like those at the Brigham Hospital or large hotel.
-spaces look OK for kids, but for Seniors? Obviously for some, not for me.

There were many challenges to fit 6 programs (Hartwell, Magic Garden, Park& Rec, COA/H&HS, LEAP, school storage) + parking for all in such a tight space.
Everyone did their best, but, maybe too much was expected.
    …just my take.
Thanks for trying and maybe others will find it checks all the boxes.
