Editor’s note: Article 45 is a citizens’ petition that asks voters if they support a resolution “that urges town boards, commissions and committees to consider, in relevant cases, and report in their minutes, the impact of their decisions on climate change; or take any other action relative thereto.”
To the editor:
Lincoln has a long history and a national reputation for being a progressive, proactive community in conservation and environmental protection that is reflected in our landscape. The town must now continue with this tradition of creative and innovative planning in finding effective ways to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
Article 45, the last article on the warrant, is intended to urge town boards, commissions and committees to take climate change in to consideration in their deliberations. It is through discussion and debate that we will become more educated and knowledgable in finding creative and practical ways of reducing our carbon footprint with the goals of increasing efficiency, lowering costs and improving the health of the town.
Climate change needs to be part of the conversation in setting policies regarding land use, site planning, building codes, conservation, water regulations, public health rules and so forth. This article not only encourages the boards, commissions and committees to address the issue of climate, but will also encourage applicants to be innovative and cognizant with their requests and plans in this regard. Voting for Article 45 will help further the conversation about climate and stimulate our creative minds as we move towards net zero.
Sincerely,
