The Lincoln-Sudbury Civic Orchestra (LSCO), the resident community/student orchestra at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, has openings for musicians for the 2014-2015 concert season.
LSCO is a volunteer community orchestra comprising high school students and adult community members who share a love for preparing and performing substantial orchestral repertoire. The members have classical music training at the intermediate to advanced level and rehearse every Tuesday evening from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the large ensemble room at L-S. Although the scores studied and performed are the original professional scores (not arrangements for school ensembles), professional performing experience is not a requirement for membership.
Openings exist in all string sections: first and second violin, viola, cello and bass. Seats are open for trumpet, trombone, French horn, oboe/English horn and percussion. LSCO often needs additional players for especially large orchestral works and also regularly needs substitute players for both rehearsals and performances. Musicians who can’t commit to the whole season but can join for select rehearsals and concerts are also needed.
Members are not required to reside in Lincoln or Sudbury; the orchestra welcomes musicians regardless of town of residence. Besides Sudbury and Lincoln, LSCO members come from Andover, Concord, Framingham, Hudson, Lexington, Marlborough, Stow, Waltham, Wayland and Weston.
LSCO will perform two full concerts in the 2014-2015 season. The winter concert on Jan. 29, 2015, to be conducted by Managing Director William Nicholson, will include Peer Gynt by Edvard Grieg, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony #2 and Mozart’s Piano Concerto #23. The spring concert date for the season has not been selected, but usually occurs in late May.
“Last year was an interesting transition year, with two wonderful interim conductors. Though we are still looking to hire a permanent conductor, we are forging ahead with our normal rehearsal and concert schedule, still dedicated to serving the education of young musicians, and to bringing community members and students together to play fabulous music,” Nicholson said. “Last year, we celebrated the orchestra’s 40th anniversary, and we’re confident we’ll do the same on its 50th in 2023.”
Musicians interested in joining LSCO should email lscivicorchestra@gmail.com.
The LSCO was founded in 1973 by then instrumental music director Don March to provide L-S students with an opportunity to play major classical orchestral repertoire in the company of professional conductors and adult community members who share their love of music. Lincoln music educator Pip Moss retired from conducting the orchestra in May 2013 after 27 years, the longest term of any LSCO conductor.
