Letter to the editor: Support hospice project

June 5, 2014

letter

To the editor:

I am writing to invite you to join me in supporting a meaningful and important project in Lincoln.

As you may know, Care Dimensions, a nonprofit organization with 35 years of experience in hospice care, has purchased land on Winter Street on the Waltham/Lincoln line to build a beautiful inpatient Hospice Center to provide medical, emotional, social and spiritual care for people in their final days of life.

I know this organization well. Four years ago, when my best friend Shira was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, I turned to Care Dimensions to begin to educate myself about end-of-life care. I was so moved by the mission and values of the organization that I took their training program and became a hospice volunteer. Over these years of working with Care Dimensions, I have been consistently impressed by the integrity, generosity, compassion and expertise with which they serve patients and families.

As Care Dimensions’ service area has expanded, it has become necessary to build a second inpatient center to meet the growing needs of the Metro West community. We are fortunate that they have chosen Lincoln, and we will have this extraordinary resource close to home.

Care Dimensions’ first inpatient facility, the Kaplan House in Danvers, is quite simply, exquisite. It is a place where families are comforted by beauty and nature alongside their grief. Huge windows let light pour in, and stone fireplaces offer warmth and cozy places to sit, reflect, rest and gather with family. I was amazed to find that every patient room has a private patio with doors that slide wide open so that hospital beds can be wheeled outside for patients to enjoy fresh air and sunshine in their final days. This is a very special place!

The new site in Lincoln will be equally beautiful and thoughtfully designed. The choice to locate the new care center on this site was not only because of the easy access off Route 128 through Waltham, but because the natural setting and views of the Cambridge reservoir will be a source of beauty and comfort.

Care Dimensions is dedicated to working with the town and neighbors to ensure that the impact on the community is positive and unobtrusive. Their lighting design is compliant with the Night Skies Initiative, and their sound studies will prevent excessive noise as well. All in all, this is an organization that reflects the dignity of their mission on every level. We can trust Care Dimensions to be a thoughtful neighbor, and we can welcome them to Lincoln wholeheartedly.

I urge you to come show your support for this project TONIGHT (Thursday, June 5) at the Zoning Board of Appeals hearing at Town Office Building. The hearing for Care Dimensions is last on the agenda, and will likely begin about 8:30.

Thank you for helping to bring this extraordinary resource in our community.

Sincerely,

Sara Levine
21 Bedford Lane, Lincoln
