Community preservation panel hears funding requests tonight

January 22, 2014

The Community Preservation Committee (CPC) will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, January 22 at 7 p.m. in the Board of Selectmen’s office in the Town Office Building to discuss funding proposals that have been submitted this year and to identify those that will be recommended for approval at Town Meeting in March 2014.

The CPC comprises nine members who represent various town boards and the community at large. It is authorized by the Community Preservation Act (CPA) to recommend expenditures in four areas of community interest: open space, preservation of historic structures, provision of low- and moderate-income housing, and recreation. CPA expenditures are funded by a 3 percent surcharge on residents’ property tax bills plus matching funds from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

This year, the CPC received 19 proposals, of which 15 are still under consideration. The total of requested funding is $825,847. The proposals are:

  • Pay debt service on Town Offices renovation — $327,825
  • Rehabilitate 75 Tower Road — $150,000
  • Lincoln School–Muster Field wetland trail — $137,355
  • Smith School playground rehabilitation  — $50,000
  • Bemis Hall basement design study — $30,000
  • Reconstruct the Library’s Preston Building roof — $20,000
  • Codman Community Farm main barn electrical work  — $15,000
  • Preserve Treasurer’s Accounts 1806-1859 in Town Archives — $10,372
  • Structural survey of the Flint Homestead  — $8,000
  • Preserve Codman Account Book in Town Archives — $6,408
  • Two historical architectural area studies  — $6,000
  • Preserve Book of Records 1746-1859 in Town Archives — $5,153
  • Codman Community Farm hay barn structural study — $5,000
  • Survey the paper and photographic collection in Town Archives to prioritize preservation needs — $4,734

The CPC welcomes your input at the public hearing, and you may also contact a CPC member to offer your opinions.
