About one in 10 older adults experience physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and spiritual abuse. Join the Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable on Tuesday, May 10 at 3 p.m. for a workshop highlighting what our communities should know about the important issue of elder abuse, presented by Safe Havens Interfaith Partnership Against Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse. While the workshop will look broadly at responding to elder abuse at the local level, Safe Havens notes that approximately 86% of older adults are faith-affiliated. Research suggests that, when faced with abuse, older adults often turn first to their faith leaders for help. With that in mind, the speakers will focus in part on the importance of faith in the lives of older adults and the ways in which community members might use these insights to offer effective support to people who might be experiencing abuse now or could be vulnerable to abuse in the future. The fifth and last class in the Healthy Soils series, “Carbon Cycling and Storage Potential in Soils,” takes place on Saturday, May 14 from 10:30 a.m.–noon. and will look at the garden as a model for carbon storage as we learn about deeply rooted perennial shrubs, conservation tillage, and composting. Throughout the afternoon, deCordova’s curatorial team will offer guided tours exploring “Brighter Days,”a focused look at Edwards’ accomplishments in large-scale sculpture and public art through six sculptures from 1970 to today. The first Lincoln Arts and Farmers Market for the 2022 season will be Saturday, June 4 from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Tack Room at 145 Lincoln Rd. Join Shakespearian performers Stephen Collins and Poornima Kirby for a rollicking ride through some of the bard’s finest poetry and most compelling characters in this original compilation of scenes, monologues and sonnets woven together with facts and lively banter. The Lincoln METCO Parent Board will host Lincoln’s first annual Juneteenth celebration on Sunday, June 12 from 1-3 p.m. at Codman Field behind the Lincoln School grade 5-8 building. The event, whose theme is “Freedom, Resistance, Power, Strength,” will feature a live DJ and dancing, a bouncy house, face painting, poetry reading, lawn games, face painting, food trucks, vendor tables, and a performance by the Lincoln Public Schools step team. “Elizabeth & Ben Anderson: Scottish Fiddle and Cello Duo” will take place under the tent at the Pierce House on Wednesday, June 15 at 7 p.m. Blending Scottish tunes with lively rhythms and innovative harmonies, the pair create a sound rooted in tradition, inspired by the contemporary but completely original. This program is supported by a grant from the Lincoln Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
On Thursday, June 16 at 7 p.m. via Zoom, Dr. Kellie Carter Jackson, Associate Professor of Africana Studies at Wellesley College, will offer an overview of the history of the holiday and an exploration of the various ways Black communities have created traditions and cultivated the joy of emancipation and freedom. The program is free and open to all but advance registration is required.
