To the editor:
We may not see a white Christmas this year, but Mary’s two cats, Snowy and her Blacky, could use a holiday miracle while their “mom” waits for cat-friendly housing.
Mary, a low-income, disabled woman in her 50s, is being evicted because her landlord wants the apartment for his daughter. And though she was just awarded a subsidized housing voucher, it will be at least a month before she can find a cat-friendly unit where she can safely live with her two cats.
“My girls mean everything to me,” she told the Phinney’s Friends volunteer who screened her for eligibility. They grew in her heart, especially after Mary lost her only child a couple of years ago.
Phinney’s Friends, a Lincoln-based nonprofit that helps low-income people keep their pets, is trying to find a foster home to keep Snowy and Blacky indoors for a couple of months. That way, she won’t lose her beloved pets who have been a source of relief and companionship to this grieving mother. The nonprofit pays for litter, food and vet bills for the cats during the fostering. And word has it that Snowy and Blacky are friendly and loving, on top of being vaccinated and spayed.
If you would like to foster them, get more information about fostering Snowy and Blacky or about volunteering for Phinney’s Friends, please email the nonprofit at phinneysfriends@gmail.com or call 857-225-2836. Snow will be well represented at the Lincoln home wherever Snowy and Blackie end up snuggling over the holidays.
Sincerely,
Daniela Caride
