Here’s the schedule for Lincoln Winter Carnival 2014, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Committee. The three-day event is designed to foster a sense of community in the town of Lincoln, and all events are sponsored by Lincoln-based organizations. Please check event description for age limits, admission fees, pre-registration information, etc.
ALL WEEKEND
Snow sculpture contest
Design and build a winter sculpture in your own front yard. Register with the Parks and Recreation Office by 5 p.m. on Saturday by calling 781-259-0784. Judging will take place on Sunday morning; there will be a “Best in Show” award as well as descriptive awards for all entries. Stockpile your snow and get creative!
THURSDAY, JANUARY 30
FoMA Film series: Zaha Hadid and other Great Women Architects
7-9 p.m., Lincoln Public Library
The Friends of Modern Architecture’s film series on modern architecture will feature two films about Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, the most famous female architect of our time and a 2004 Pritzker Prize winner. Her bold and controversial projects around the world have won extravagant praise and sharp criticism. This program will include film clips and a discussion about other distinguished female architects.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 31
Lincoln Short Film Festival
1-3 p.m., Bemis Hall
Everyone is invited to the Lincoln Short Film Festival, which features work by or related to filmmakers current or former Lincoln residents.You’ll enjoy dramas, comedies, travelogues and documentaries. After some of the films, we’ll have discussions with the filmmakers. Refreshments will be served. Sponsored by the Lincoln Council on Aging.
Community Bingo Night
5:30-7:30 p.m., Brooks Gym
This annual event features pizza, prizes, raffle drawings and plenty of bingo for players of all ages. Admission is free; a 19-game multipack of bingo cards is $5 and a pizza dinner (pizza, a beverage and a cookie) is also $5. Sponsored by the Lincoln PTO.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1
Girl Scout Pancake Breakfast
8-10 a.m., First Parish Church
Start your carnival Saturday with homemade, all-you-can-eat blueberry, chocolate chip, or plain pancakes. There will also be face-painting and Girl Scout cookies for sale. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for children.
LEAP into the Magic
10 a.m. to noon, Hartwell Pod A
Join us for a special hour-long magic show by the magnificent Eddie Raymond! After the show, Magic Garden and LEAP will be open for visits. Kids can also participate in drop-in activities and games in Pod A until noon. Co-sponsored by the Lincoln Extended-day Activities Program (LEAP) and the Magic Garden Children’s Center. Admission is free.
Snowshoe Tours
10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum
Enjoy nature and art in winter and discover a new, fun and active way to explore the sculpture park. Tours are approximately 90 minutes and will be led by a museum guide and a trained EMS instructor. Visit the deCordova calendar website to purchase tickets. Limit of 12 people per group.
Community Skating
1-3 p.m., Lincoln Cemetery pond (off Lexington Road)
Enjoy skating, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows by the campfire. Bring your own skates. Weather permitting; event status will be confirmed on the Parks and Rec website by noon that day. Sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Committee. Free.
LFA Energy Blaster
3:30-5:30 p.m., Brooks gym
Calling all kids—join your friends (and their parents!) and burn some energy! Joust on platforms, jump in a bounce house, and try your skill at a variety of indoor games. Enjoy healthy snacks and coffee. Free for current Lincoln Family Association members; $10 per child for non-members. Free admission when you join the LFA or renew your membership on the spot.
Acoustic Coffee House
7-10 p.m., Bemis Hall
Come to an adult night of music and fun. Coffee, tea and desserts will be served while local talent performs for your enjoyment. Make advance reservations at the Park and Rec website (click the blue “Register Now” button and choose Register for Activities –> Winter Carnival 2014). Any remaining seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis when the doors open at 7 p.m. Interested performers should download and submit this online application. Admission is $10 per person, or reserve your own table for up to eight people for $160. Sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Committee.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2
Groundhog Day at Drumlin Farm
10 a.m., Drumlin Farm
Will we have six more weeks of winter or an early spring? Find out by heading to Drumlin Farm for a full day of fun winter activities to help celebrate this festive day. Learn about hibernation, winter ecology, and how to identify animal tracks in the snow. Ms. G, Lincoln’s resident groundhog, will make her prediction at 10 a.m., with a special celebration to follow. Puppet Show
2 p.m., Lincoln Public Library
Vermont PuppeTree gives a new twist to the well-loved children’s book Swimmy by Leo Lioni. This 40-minute extravaganza for children of all ages includes animation, video projections and shadow puppets. Sponsored by the Friends of the Lincoln Public Library. Free admission.
Forum on Digital Archives
2 p.m., Bemis Hall
Come to a presentation from Lincoln Town Archivist Marie Wasnock and Boston Public Library Digital Projects Manager Tom Blake as they discuss the art and practice of creating and disseminating historical records with modern archival digitization technology. They will present an overview of the Lincoln Town Archives collections and others such as Digital Commonwealth that are available online to demonstrate how to access, search and contribute to these resources. Sponsored by the Lincoln Historical Society. Admission is free.
