As they prepare to develop the 2014-15 academic calendar for the Lincoln school district, school officials are seeking ideas and recommendations from the community by various means, including at two public sessions next week.
The school district used all five of its allotted snow days in 2012 and the last day of school wasn’t until June 27, which created headaches for families and faculty and prompted questions about how the calendar might be adjusted in the future. Residents are invited to attend a calendar discussion on either of two days:
- Wednesday, October 16 — Hanscom Primary School prep room, 8-10 a.m.
- Friday, October 18 — Lincoln School library story room, 8-10 a.m.
Anyone who can’t attend one of these sessions is welcome to share ideas during the public comment portion of a School Committee meeting or send an email to schoolcomm@lincnet.org. The committee’s two meetings are on October 24 and November 7 in the Hartwell multipurpose room at 7 p.m.. Faculty and staff members should send their input to their LTA representative or Janice Gross at jgross@lincnet.org.
The deadline for submitting input is November 15.
Some of the factors that are considered when planning the academic calendar include:
- The state requirement to schedule at least 185 days of school per year and to operate schools for at least 180 days
- Whether to start the school year before or after Labor Day
- School releases for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Good Friday, parent conferences and professional days
- The schedules of Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School and Bedford High School
