Things to know about: Lincoln Junior Hikers, track work, a school building charette and more…
Junior Hikers walk tomorrow
The Lincoln Junior Hikers will meet for a two-mile round-trip walk tomorrow (Sunday, September 8) at 2 p.m. Join them at the trailhead near 49 Stonehedge Road. The group will head for the Van Leer boardwalk between north Weston and southern Lincoln. As always, parents are responsible for supervising their children.
Look for upcoming announcements about the trail maintenance day with the Conservation Commission on Saturday, October 5 and the history hike in Adams Woods on Sunday, October 6.
MBTA track work kicks into high gear
The rail crossing at Tower Road is closed this weekend but will reopen to traffic on Monday, September 9 at 6 a.m. There will be also construction noise at night and on weekends as well as road closures and suspension of weekend commuter rail service during a track improvement project from North Station to South Acton, the MBTA has announced.
Starting today, weekend commuter rail service in Lincoln will be suspended through November 17, although weekday service will be unaffected, as announced earlier by the MBTA and in a reverse-911 call to residents this week from Police Chief Kevin Mooney.
In an August letter to town officials, MBTA project manager Kim Dubocz said there will be 24-hour-a-day construction and periodic one-lane restrictions to allow work on new grade crossings at four rail intersections in Lincoln. The work schedule for the Lincoln Road crossing has not been announced, but the other two crossings will be closed to traffic at the following times:
- Old Sudbury Road—Friday, Sept. 13 at 11:59 p.m. to Monday, Sept. 16 at 6 a.m.
- South Great Road (Rte. 117)—Friday, Sept. 20 at 11:59 p.m. to Monday, Sept. 23 at 6 a.m.
The MBTA has established a project hotline and email address for comments or complaints at 617-721-7506 and FitchburgProject@MBTA.com and and a project web site for general information. The town’s public safety and public works staff will monitor construction and communicate concerns to the MBTA as the project proceeds.
School building charette scheduled
The School Building Advisory Committee (SBAC) will hold a working charette on Wednesday, September 11 at 6 p.m. in the Hartwell Multipurpose Room. The goal of the charette is to provide the SBAC, as part of its planning and deliberative process, an opportunity to further develop, sharpen and test its ideas about possible pathways for pursing a school building project in Lincoln. The charette is open to the public and the public is welcome and encouraged to attend. The SBAC is charged with recommending to the School Committee two to four possible pathways for another attempt at getting a school building project approved by voters.

Save your Donelan’s receipts to benefit school
The Lincoln PTO is collecting Donelan’s receipts from Lincoln and Acton stores only to benefit the Lincoln School. Through the Register Tapes for Education program, schools earn points for every receipt dollar, which can then be redeemed for free equipment and supplies including pens, pencils, computers, sports equipment, flat screen TVs, and more. Last year, the Lincoln School redeemed receipts for a marker board, simple machine kits, activity table and more. Receipts dated between September 1, 2013 and March 2014 can be dropped off at one of four locations: Smith School lobby, Brooks School office, the Whistlestop Cafe or Something Special.
